In what consists our project?
A bridge of solidarity connects our hearts to a wonderful community in Mexico, beyond borders. We are a group of volunteers driven by a desire to make a difference and bring smiles and concrete help where it is needed most. On this page, I will encouter our journey and mission, and explain how we strive to build a better future for them together.
Our logo
The minimalist logo consists of two elements: the website title, “VolontariaMente,” and a representative icon.
The icon depicts two differently sized hands (one larger than the other) to symbolize the impact the group hopes to make on the community in Chiapas, Mexico. The size difference alludes to adults and youth collaborating to support this small community.
The title “VolontariaMente” is written with capital letters to emphasize the name of the site. In particular, the capital “M” emphasizes a fundamental concept in volunteering: not only is the heart essential, but the mind is too. This is because mental effort is crucial to solving problems, fostering teamwork, and finding effective solutions.
The warm colours evoke the Mexican environment and creates a sense of welcome and emotional involvement, inviting people to participate in the project.

Our history
It all started when my high school religion teacher met Raúl, a key figure who shaped our path in the world of volunteering forever.
He told my teacher about the indigenous community of San José del Carmen in Chiapas, Mexico. It was a community marked by profound difficulties, including violence from criminal groups, isolation, and little support from local authorities.
After hearing that vivid and authentic testimony, the professor decided to start a volunteer group at our school that would continue beyond school hours. The group is supported by the nonprofit organization A.P.I.Bi.M.I , which partially supports our expenses and through which we send funds to Mexico.
Since then, more and more young people have joined the group. The group did more than raise funds to support the Mexican community; they also organized moments of reflection and raised awareness about issues such as prisons, addiction, and social justice.
The turning point finally came in 2017 when that year’s group left for Mexico . After years of providing distance support, it was time to meet the community in person, put faces to names, spend time together, and learn from them. From that first trip, a group formed outside of school, along with deep relationships and an increasingly concrete commitment—thanks in part to the active participation of families, teachers, and friends.
My experience
I joined the school group in 2022. Right away, I knew that I had found my place in the world.
It was a place where I could freely and authentically express myself without fear of judgment. I formed strong friendships that continue today, even though we are far apart.
For years, the group was one of my priorities—a refuge amidst daily thoughts, a place where I felt useful, alive, and heard.
By the time I arrived in fifth grade, I was one of the veterans. Together with two other girls, I was in charge of organizing almost every activity. It wasn’t easy to balance everything with school and personal commitments, but I would do it again a thousand times. It was my breath of fresh air and my way of lightheartedly doing something important.
I am no longer part of the school group, but I continue my journey with the group that formed in 2018. It is called Manos Abiertas and was founded by people who visited Mexico and carry it in their hearts.
The Events
Our year begins in October when the group meets the newcomers. It is a special time of welcome and introductions, when the veterans share their experiences and introduce the activities that will accompany the group in the following months.
From October to December
During the first few months of the school year, we focus on the Solidal Dinner, one of our most meaningful events. We handcraft centerpieces, posters, and decorations to set the stage for an evening that brings together conviviality and solidarity.
From January to March
In the winter, we focus on important issues that affect us young people. We organize events to raise awareness about topics such as justice and imprisonment. We meet with people who have experienced prison firsthand. Their stories touch us, prompting reflection and helping us to see the world in a new light.
There is also a weekend retreat in Monclassico during this time, where we strengthen our bonds and explore themes in a more intimate setting.
From April to June
As the year comes to a close, we prepare for the Apericena, the event that marks the end of our journey. It’s an evening outdoors filled with merriment, music, and fellowship that bids farewell to the past year and makes room for new beginnings.
